How to Document Your Expenses After a Car Accident

If you have been injured in a car accident, the last thing you need to worry about is how you are going to pay medical bills and other expenses you have incurred as a result of the accident. That’s why the law allows personal injury victims to recover compensation from the at-fault party for their medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. How can you prove that you are entitled to compensation? Strengthen your car accident claim by documenting your expenses in the following ways:

Take pictures.

Immediately following the accident, take pictures of the property damage and any injuries you have sustained. It’s important to take multiple photos so you can capture the property damage and injuries from different angles. It never hurts to have too many photos, so take as many as possible to ensure you can prove the extent of the damage and your injuries.

Keep receipts.

Find a safe place in your home where you can keep all of the receipts for expenses related to the car accident. You should collect receipts for doctor visits, prescription medications, walking aids, wheelchairs, and anything else you have to pay for as a result of the car accident. It may be wise to scan each of these receipts so you have a digital copy as well as a physical copy. Some receipts are printed with low quality ink that tends to fade over time. It would be a shame to go to the trouble of saving these receipts only to find out that you can’t read anything on them in a few weeks, so protect yourself by making digital copies.

Track lost wages.

Car accident victims may also recover compensation for lost wages if their injuries have prevented them from working. To improve your chances of recovering lost wages, it’s important to document evidence that you missed work. Ask your physician for a letter that explains your injuries in detail and also mentions how much time you will need to take off from work to recover. Then, ask your employer for a letter that confirms the dates you have missed. You should also gather your pay stubs from the last several months so you can show how much you take home on a regular basis.

Keep a journal.

Begin keeping a journal after the car accident so you can document the progress of your injuries. Go into detail about the physical and emotional pain you are experiencing. This information may help you recover compensation for pain and suffering caused by the accident.
